Currently Three Rivers Reformed Baptist Church has two elders – Kobus van der Walt (full-time) and Athi Mgqibelo.
Kobus was born in Bethlehem (Free State) and grew up in Aliwal North (Eastern Cape) where he also matriculated. He began his studies at the then Pretoria College of Education and after he graduated at the former Potchefstroom College of Education, his teaching career commenced – a few years later he completed a BA (part time) at the Potchefstroom University (PUKKE – Now North West University – Potchefstroom campus).
During his career as school principal in Carletonville, he enrolled for the degree B.Th (at PUK – Telematic). After five years of part-time studies in theology he bid the educational field goodbye, and accepted a call to the Antipas congregation in Vereeniging (see also: http://3riversbaptist.co.za/history/).
Kobus is married to Jeanne.
Athi grew up in the Eastern Cape in a small town called Ntabankulu where he also matriculated. After matric he went to Durban where he attended the University of KwaZulu Natal and completed his studies, obtaining a B.Com Accounting degree. While in Durban, Athi was saved in his first year by the grace of God. He became part of a local church and eventually served in various capacities in the church, as well as a deacon. During this time, he became acquainted with Reformed theology and started learning deeply about theology in general through various preachers and books.
Eventually, he moved to the Vaal Triangle and joined our church. After some time of discipleship and membership, the congregation observed pastoral giftings and thereby approached him in being an elder of the church.
He is currently working as an administration clerk at a local company.
